Joanna was born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and immigrated to the US in 1954 with her husband, John. They settled in the Warwick area and raised their two sons, John and Anthony (Tony) there.

Joanna became an Associate of the Franciscan Sisters of the Poor in 2004. Prior to this, Joanna had been employed at Mt. Alverno Center, working for the sisters in the infirmary and assisting other sisters. She got to know Sr. Jolenta Kovach and other sisters during her 10 years of service. When Joanna retired, she accompanied Sr. Jolenta on her weekly trips to Wilkes Barre, Pa., taking food that had been collected in Warwick to the poor and doing other social outreach with the elderly. Joanna chose Sr. Jolenta as her sponsor when she made her first covenant as an Associate.

Joanna worked every day as a volunteer at Mt. Alverno and Schervier Nursing Home. She knew all the residents and had a gentle and respectful presence about her. She was always present to people.

Joanna had great devotion to the sisters and was grateful to share in the life and Ministry of the Franciscan Sisters of the Poor as she stated in her covenants of renewal. Her last was on May 6, 2017.

Thank you, Joanna, for your witness of living the Gospel in the spirit of St. Francis and Mother Frances through the Associate relationship. The work you have done in the name of the Risen Christ speaks for you because it speaks loudly of the abundant goodness and presence of God that dwelled in you as gift for others. Rest in peace!
