Though immersed in crises both locally and globally, as Franciscan Sisters of the Poor we respond with radical hope by renewing our ministries in Brazil.

This is why we decided to build a gathering place next to our convent and have dedicated it to our foundress, Blessed Frances Schervier, who had boundless love for the poor.

The Frances Schervier Formation Center in Goiânia, Goias, Brazil has this as its essential purpose: inspiring people to live in a more joyful, incarnational way to foster unity and reconciliation.

Giving our Gifts in this Ministry

We are using the gifts among us, sharing all that is good and beautiful, and offering them as gifts to others -- making them available to everyone in the community. This allows us to serve those who are needy, vulnerable, at risk and isolated in our midst. We dare to bring about transformation through our own form of community building by inviting people of all ages in our neighborhood to enjoy this Center and its various activities: catechesis, art, music, programs for women, spiritual development, health and a community Toy Room for children – a safe and comfortable place for children and families to share toys and games and to celebrate.

Carla, a dedicated volunteer says: “I enjoy watching the participation of the children and their families. I encourage play and games that will contribute to forming responsible and caring adults, helping to build a more just and compassionate society.” This is truly an intergenerational project. Another volunteer, a grandmother (affectionately called ‘Grandma Goreth’) said: “The Toy Room has a creative approach to play, with activities that sharpen the mind and stimulate the imagination.”

The Mother Frances Youth Group – a New and Vital Ministry
Through God’s grace and the blessing of Blessed Frances Schervier, many volunteers and staff have been generously working with us. We have started a ministry with young people at the Center called: The Mother Frances Youth Group. Working with pre-teens and teens is exciting! They are full of vitality, eager to make friends, and long to be formed in personal values. These beautiful young people yearn to be heard and to communicate with others and want to show their affection, pray in common and receive spiritual formation. Here are their experiences in their own words . . .

“It was at the Center that I began taking dance classes, acting and going to Church! I have learned how to love others as myself and to reverence people.

Through acting and theater, I had a new experience of love, of coming to know the word of God and of spending time with others in the youth group.

Being here gives me great joy. I have formed friendships with so many different people from various cultural backgrounds and religions.”

Nelma Batista Silva
Secretary of the Center

“It is a gratifying though challenging experience! As I volunteer to help others, I also grow spiritually. I meet people who empower me creatively especially during the exchange of experiences with the women and the young people who come to the Center.”

“Coming to this unique place has changed me! I made new friendships and my stress has diminished. I learn new things and share them with others. Here we learn to respect everyone’s own space.”

Sister Lécia José da Silva says with enthusiasm: “Moments of grace occur where there is an exchange of experiences, knowledge, gifts and talents. When our talents are shared, we feel like we are building harmonious, joyful and life-giving relationships.” Blessed Frances Schervier was a true missionary who brought healing, love and solidarity to the poor and everyone else around her. Today she would probably be with all the age groups at the Frances Schervier Formation Center encouraging them as they build communities of love and unity.
